Uncle
Earl’s Hog Dog Trials
March
22-25, 2007
In 1995, in conjunction with the Centennial Celebration
of Earl Kemp Long, the "Uncle Earl’s" Hog
Dog trials became an annual event in Winnfield. The annual
"Uncle Earl’s" Hog Dog Trials are held the
fourth full weekend of March. The heritage of hog hunting
is a traditional sport in Winn Parish and a lot of times
it wasn’t done for the fun of it. It meant meat on
the table and often times still does. We have families in
Winn Parish who have been hunting hogs on the same land
for generations. Earl Long was an avid hog hunter and Winnfield
has kept this legacy alive. The Hog Dog Trials are the world’s
largest and have been coined as the "Super Bowl"
of hog dog baying. This sport is part of our heritage in
Louisiana. The folks of Winn Parish enjoy life, and our
visitors are always among friends when they come to Winnfield
for "Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials."
Uncle
Earl’s Youth Scholarship
The
Winn Hog Hunters Association has a profound interest in
the development and well being of those young people involved
in Hog Hunting. Three individuals will be qualified each
year for scholarship recognition.
Funds that are donated for the express purpose of funding
the scholarship and the entry fee of the junior baying support
this worthy endeavor for the young Hog Hunters. This fund
varies from year to year, consequently, scholarship value
will vary accordingly. The Winn Hog Hunters are always on
the look out for new contributors for this admirable cause.

Forest Festival
April 27-28,
2007
The Louisiana Forest Festival,
re-organized in 1980,
salutes Louisiana’s timber industry. Timber products
are the largest agricultural crop in Louisiana. The three-day
festival encompasses timber-related activities such as competitions
in log loading, skidding, grappling for bucks, truck rodeo,
and professional timber sports. There are also numerous
forestry equipment displays and related exhibits. Professional
timber sports competitors come from the United States, Canada
and Australia to participate in the year’s first circuit
show.
The Louisiana State Woodsman’s Skills Championship
is held during the festival. 4-H youth from throughout the
state compete in various timber-related contests such as
crosscut sawing, log rolling and bow-saw, rope climbing
and match splitting. And like most festivals in Louisiana,
there are numerous food booths, family oriented activities,
and children's rides.
The Louisiana Forest
Festival has a scholarship that is open to all Winn Parish
Senior's. For a copy of the application contact Angelia
at 318.628.5928.

In case you haven't seen or heard, organized
lawnmower racing is alive and well, especially in Louisiana!
The Louisiana Lawnmower
Racing Association is run primarily for racing enthusiasts
and their friends and family. Members race lawnmowers for
the "relatively low costs and high return of adrenaline,"
along with the love of competition. All who share this philosophy
and can agree to play by the rules are welcome to join and
participate. We are family oriented, family friendly organization
with emphasis on good sportsmanship, fair play and sound
judgment, all in an alcohol and drug free environment!
The Louisiana Lawnmower Racing Association (LLMRA) recently
held a race in Ruston, Louisiana for the first time, at
the North Louisiana Exhibition Center. These mowers won't
cut grass anymore, but they will throw a rooster tail and
cut some quick lap times! The rules allow the substitution
of stock mower stuff with go-kart steering components and
brakes for safety, but the rest of it has to be originally
from a mower. There are classes for single cylinder and
twins, and flathead or overhead-valve classes as well. There
are several age groups to compete in, including a class
for kids ages 8-14 and a Powder Puff class.
Founded and run by Jerry 'Cornflakes' Martin from Winnfield,
Louisiana, the LLMRA puts on regularly scheduled races,
with crowd attendance in the hundreds at their local arena
in Wheeling, LA. The arena is 30,000 sq. ft. and is a covered,
banked, dirt oval track. There is also a 5,000 sq. ft. A/C
display and concession area. Racing rain of shine!
If you are interested in building and racing a mower, the
rules are available on request or can be found on the website
www.mowbay.com.
