Gum
Springs Horse Trail
Enjoy a horseback
ride through the forest on two developed, scenic trails.
The trailhead is located approximately 8 miles west of Winnfield
in Winn Parish. From the trailhead, one can access two developed
trails and miles of open forest.
The Blue Loop (blazed
with blue diamonds) is approximately 5.6 miles in length.
The trail is wide enough to accommodate wagons and crosses
over two bridges. Water is available year round at the Bombing
Range Pond and elsewhere along the trail, depending on the
season. The pond is just over an acre in size and is man-made.
The Yellow Loop (blazed
with yellow diamonds) is approximately 18 miles in length.
This loop follows the Blue Loop for approximately 2.5 miles.
These sections are blazed with both blue and yellow diamonds.
This trail is also wide enough to accommodate wagon traffic.
The trail passes between the Moss Blake ponds and has water
intermittently along the rest of the trail.
Sections of both trails pass through Keiffer Prairie where
native grasses and cedar trees are predominate. The remainder
crosses piney woods and hardwood bottoms. Ushod animals
can travel either trail with little or no problem. Care
should be taken at road crossings.
Facilities at
the trailhead include the following:
Primitive campsites with tables and fire rings, trash cans,
toilets, three corrals, hitching posts, and a pond for watering
animals as well as drinking water. There is a $3.00 fee
for overnight camping only.
Any group over 75
will need a Special Use Permit. This permit can be obtained
from the Winn Ranger District Office. Permit must be acquired
at least 48 hours prior to the ride.
